Mandatory Reporters of Child Abuse and Neglect

Nebraska Rev. Stat. § 28-711 sets forth a list of professionals required to report suspected child abuse and neglect (including sexual abuse) to authorities. The list includes physicians, medical institutions, nurses, school employees, social workers, and the office of Inspector General of Nebraska Child Welfare.

In addition, all other persons who have reasonable cause to believe that a child has been subjected to abuse or neglect must report.

Failure to report is a misdemeanor.

Sexual Abuse and Exploitation

Nebraska Rev. Stat. § 28-710 provides that the term ‘child abuse or neglect’ includes knowingly, intentionally, or negligently causing or permitting a minor child to be:

  • Sexually abused
  • Sexually exploited by allowing, encouraging, or forcing the child to solicit for or engage in prostitution, debauchery, public indecency, or obscene or pornographic photography, films, or depictions
